Shaping

Guide users towards desired actions through progressive reinforcement.

Definition

Shaping is a UX principle that involves gradually guiding users towards a particular behavior or action through a series of small, successful steps. By reinforcing each step that leads to the desired action, users are encouraged to continue interacting in a way that aligns with the design's intended path.

Do

  • Use small, manageable steps to introduce users to new features
  • Provide clear feedback to users after each successful step
  • Reinforce positive user behavior with rewards or positive feedback

Avoid

  • Avoid overwhelming users with too much information at once
  • Don't neglect to provide feedback after each step
  • Avoid abrupt changes that might confuse the user

When to apply

  • When introducing new features or complex functionalities
  • When guiding the user towards a specific action or behavior
  • When you want to provide positive reinforcement for user engagement
