Affect Heuristic

Emotional states strongly influence judgments and decision-making.

Definition

The Affect Heuristic is a mental shortcut that allows people to make decisions and solve problems quickly and efficiently, where current emotional states have a significant impact on decision-making processes. People may rely more on their emotional responses than on a detailed assessment of the situation.

Do

  • Design interfaces that evoke positive emotions
  • Consider the user's emotional state when designing decision-making scenarios
  • Use colors, typography, and images that evoke the desired emotional response

Avoid

  • Don't overload the user with information during decision-making
  • Don't neglect the emotional aspect of your design
  • Don't make users feel stressed or frustrated during decision-making

When to apply

  • When users are making quick decisions
  • When users are in a high-stress environment
  • When the decision-making scenario is emotionally charged
